The Hiwassee Dam Volunteer Fire Department is a rural, all-volunteer department located in Cherokee County, NC. We are designated as Station 20. We are in the extreme southwestern corner of North Carolina in the Nantahala National Forest. We provide primary fire/first responder protection to a 78 square mile district. We operate out of two stations and serve a 6 mile district. We have 2 Class A engines, 2 tankers, 2 brush/medical response trucks, and a truck dedicated just for medical response. We average 130 calls/year with approximately 50% being fire related and 50% medical.
The Hiwassee Dam Volunteer Fire Department is led by 5 officers. The officers for this fiscal year are Chief Larry McNabb, Assistant Chief Kevin Keough, Captain Daniel McNabb, Lieutenant Phil Hackler, and Lieutenant Faron Baker. A five member Board of Directors manages the financial side of the HDVFD. The Board of Directors include Chairman Kent Payne, Michael Starks, T.L. McNabb, Stanley Graham, and Debi Baker. Bobby Giddens is the Secretary/Treasurer of HDVFD. Jordan Keough has recently been selected as our Junior Firefighter Program Coordinator. All Board of Directors and the Secretary/Treasurer are also firefighters.
The HDVFD offers in-house training on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month at 7 pm at our main station 7815 Hwy 294, Murphy, NC. We provide each of our volunteers with structural turn-out gear, boots, helmet, gloves, hood, pager and a two-way radio. We also offer paid retirement, life/disability insurance and access to the NC State Employees credit union and health insurance.
