OSHA Emergency Response

The HDVFD owns and maintains a very reliable fleet of apparatus. Also, we own a tremendous amount of equipment for a department our size. Our apparatus includes a 1999 Freightliner/Quality 1500/1000 Pumper/Tanker. It is designated as 2051. We also own a 1974 Ford/FMC 750/750 Pumper that is designated 2052. In the tanker department, we own a 1988 Ford/Southern States 1250 gallon tanker (2061) and a 1974 Ford/Atlas 1000 gallon tanker (2062). We have 2 brush trucks that double as quick response vehicles for medical first response. One of these is a 1980 Dodge and the other is a 1974 Dodge. We also have a 2002 Duramax Diesel Chevrolet designated as 2073, it is used for medical response only.
Each engine is equipped with 2- 200 feet 1 3/4 inch crosslays, 1- 2 1/2 inch attack lines and with 1200 feet of 3 inch supply line. We do not have a hydrant system in our service area. We also carry Class "A" foam with eductors on both engines. We have a full complement of ground ladders and hand tools as required by the North Carolina Department of Insurance. We use positive pressure ventilation fans, and carbide tipped chainsaw for ventilation. We use Survivair SCBA and carry a total of 18 packs and 60 spare bottles. We have 3 fold-a-tanks that vary in size from 1500-2500 gallons. Three of our trucks have jet-assist dumps in the rear for tanker shuttles. Both of our tankers have small PTO pumps and also carry portable floating pumps for use in streams and lakes. We provide first response for Cherokee County EMS. This has proven to be a huge asset to our citizens. The average response time for a med unit to our response district is 25 minutes, so our response is very important. On our first response trucks, we carry rakes, shovels, and booster lines for fire-fighting. We also carry oxygen, bandages, splints, c-collars, suction, OB Kits, and AEDs.
